Text-Based Court Date Reminders Work, Oklahoma Launches a New Program
Missing a court date is easier than most people think. Life is busy, paperwork gets lost, and court information can be confusing. Just like missing a dentist appointment or other important obligations, life happens.

The date and time of a court date can be forgotten, or other barriers to attending court may come up unexpectedly. Fortunately, Oklahoma has launched a state-wide text reminder program to help people make it to their court dates.
The consequences for failure to appear can be serious. Missed court dates can lead to warrants, jail time, rescheduled hearings, and additional fines, even when the original charges are minor and the case itself has little to do with public safety.
To help people avoid these serious consequences, court systems throughout the country are utilizing text-based court date reminders. When reminders are done well, they work.
According to research from ideas42 and The Pew Charitable Trusts these reminders are a simple, low-cost way to help people show up and reduce missed court dates by 11% to 61%. One of the most important things the research tells us is why reminders work. Most people who miss court fully intend to go. Forgetfulness, confusion, and the challenge of juggling work, childcare, and transportation are the real barriers, not defiance. Reminders help cut through the overload and give people a nudge at the right time.
How reminders are designed is important, especially when it comes to enrollment. Studies consistently show that automated systems work better than manual ones, and that automatic enrollment with an option for people to opt-out dramatically increases participation and attendance. Research from Pew in 2025 found that opt-in systems often reach only a small fraction of eligible people, while automatic enrollment can reach 70% to 90% of people.
For example, a case study from ideas42 showed that when Colorado switched from an opt-in to an opt-out reminder system, the number of reminders sent jumped from about 56,000 to 224,000 in a single month, a 300% increase, simply by changing how people were enrolled. Messages that include additional information, like consequences for not showing up, are even more effective.
A single missed court date can cost nearly $1,500 in staff time and other resources which is why court text reminders are a smart investment for courts and communities alike. Oklahoma’s statewide text-based court date reminder program is a great first step in the right direction.
While the system is still new and has room to grow, it signals a willingness to use proven tools to improve court outcomes and efficiency. With continued attention and thoughtful design, Oklahoma’s program can help more people show up to court, reduce unnecessary system involvement, and make the court process work a little better for everyone.
How to use Oklahoma’s new system:
Go to www.OSCN.net and click “Court Dockets” to search either by an individual’s name or by the county and case number.
Click the blue “Get Text Reminders” button on the right side of the “Events” section.
There are three options to proceed: Scan the QR code on the screen, click the link below the QR code, or text “subscribe” with the two-letter county code and case number to 1-877-849-0889.
You will receive a text message to confirm your subscription. Reply “YES” to confirm.
IMPORTANT:
Text reminders are not automatic. You must enroll to receive the reminders.
To receive reminders for more than one case, you must sign up for each case number individually.
You are responsible for any charges or fees for text messages assessed by your cell phone provider.
To avoid a warrant, you must attend all court dates. Even if a text reminder is not received or read, you are still required to appear in court.
